Making of...
My bridal bouquet, option 7: Summer loving, having a blast
My bridal bouquet, option 7: Summer loving, having a blast
As I've mentioned, I'm not into recording myself and so creating "making of" videos is out of the question (I tried, and it wasn't very interesting and my face is not very enjoyable to watch). So here's the JT-take on a BTS video. I recently made a bridal bouquet to give myself time to practice and play, whilst also trying to help me decide on my colours and vibe for my wedding flowers.
Inspiration and colour palette
I can be inspired by many things like a colour palette, or a single colour, a single flower, an artwork, an emotion, an object or combination of all of the above, or something totally random. In this instance I was inspired by the colour pink, summer and confetti. I wanted to try bright and bold shades of pink but paired with softer tones and contrasting hues. I felt this captured "me" as I'm a total introvert so whilst I love colour, I didn't want it to be too loud or over the top. My final selection was: hot pink, magenta, peach, blue and white.
Flower materials
Next I think about flower material. I first start with the season (i.e. Summer) and what's currently available. I've gained a lot of knowledge on seasonality from my Cert |||, going to the markets regularly, research, and also from Google/Gemini. When selecting flower materials I try to choose a range of:
Focal - larger size, usually single blooms, that will be centre stage of the design
Filler - small size, usually a spray of blooms, that will create bulk, texture and interest
Linear and/or "dancers" - long, line shapes that will add create shape and/or movement in the design. They usually float or "dance" around the design
It's a bit of thinking which flowers are available and what colours they come in - and balancing the colour palette against the flowers. At this stage I really try to visualise the design and the overall shape and colour distribution to determine materials, this is my favourite part and it involves a lot of day dreaming (hehe). Then I make a shopping list with a few back up options because it never goes to plan when I go to market!
My final selection...
Focals: Rose (hot pink), Dahlia (magenta), Mini Gerbera (peach)
Fillers: Lisianthus (pink), Carnation (white)
Linear/dancers: Daisy (white), Delphinium (blue)
Construction
This was a hand spiraled, round posy design with even placement and distribution. I generally prefer grouped or cluster placements but as I was going for confetti vibes this design suited it better. I started by making a tight round ball with the base layer of flowers and then layered on top of this to give it more of an asymmetrical/organic shape. Sorry I don't have a video on this but there's plenty out there on basic bouquet construction :)
Reflections
I really loved the colours of this one and overall shape of it. I like the bright pinks and thought it was quite fun without being over the top, which is my general vibe. I did think it was a little on the small side and I ran out of daisies so there wasn't many of them at the back of the design. I would add more daisies, roses, lisianthus next time otherwise it would be a super cute petite bouq for a bride :)
Thanks for reading so far! How am I doing?
Kindest,
JT xo
